Sometimes you feel like some nuts

March 19, 2008

At Tatte Fine Cookies & Cakes, all the handmade tarts, fruit pies, brioches (above), and cookies taste as spectacular as they look. The new Brookline bakery also has flourless brownies ($4), which are sinfully rich; foot-long fig and almond biscotti ($3), subtly sweet and superbly crunchy; and crumb cheesecakes ($6 a slice), light and creamy. But it's the specialty nut boxes (below) and pies ($6 to $38) - rectangular pastry shells filled with heaping mounds of nuts held together with a delicate caramel - that are the real showstoppers. Israeli-born Tzurit Or, who learned to bake when she was 7, wowed sweets eaters last summer at the Copley Square farmers' market. Lucky for us, she's now in her own shop. The baker puts heart and soul in each bite. Tatte Fine Cookies & Cakes, 1003 Beacon St., Brookline, 617-232-2200, tattecookies.com. - LISA ZWIRN
